A new era of catalyst handling across Zambia & the DRC
By Warren Du Plessis – Regional Director, Zambia & DRC Operations
In today’s complex industrial environment — from copper smelters to petrochemical refineries — catalyst performance is a key driver of process efficiency and profitability. But there’s one often-overlooked variable that can make or break your operations: how your catalysts are handled.
At DGC AFRICA, we specialise in delivering end-to-end catalyst handling services tailored to the unique challenges of mining and process plants across Zambia, the DRC, and beyond.
We’ve seen firsthand how improper unloading, screening, or loading leads to higher attrition, contamination, and downtime. That’s why we’ve invested in both technology and regional expertise — to raise the standard of catalyst management across sub-Saharan Africa.
WHY CATALYST HANDLING IS A STRATEGIC PRIORITY
Catalysts are fragile and highly sensitive to damage, dust, and uneven distribution. Mishandling during changeouts can result in:
· Reduced conversion efficiency
· Premature catalyst failure
· Blocked flow, channelling, or pressure drop
· Unnecessary cost and environmental risk
A well-executed catalyst changeout isn’t just a technical procedure — it’s a critical operational discipline.
INTRODUCING OUR NEW MOBILE CATALYST SCREENING UNIT
In 2025, DGC AFRICA launched a state-of-the-art mobile Catalyst Screening Unit, custom-designed to provide on-site, high-throughput, and dust-controlled screening campaigns.
This unit is a game-changer for clients across Zambia and the DRC.
KEY FEATURES:
· Double axle trailer-mounted unit for rapid on-site deployment
· 2 x 3 vibratory screening with interchangeable meshes for various catalyst sizes
· Screening throughput: 8,000–10,000 litres/hour
· Twin large-diameter cyclones with continuous discharge and dust collection
· Bag filter unit for both vacuum and screening dust
· Two Stainless Steel LR 1200 Liquid Ring Vacuum Pumps powered by dual 90kW electric motors
· Built-in water tanks and 30-metre, 4-inch rubber-lined vacuum nozzles
With this mobile solution, we’re able to respond quickly, cost-effectively, and safely — even in remote industrial locations with strict shutdown windows.
OUR INTEGRATED CATALYST HANDLING PROCESS
We manage the full lifecycle with precision and control:
1. UNLOADING
· Specialised vacuumation for minimal breakage
· Precision separation by catalyst age and type
· Full MSDS-compliant safety procedures
2. SCREENING
· On-site removal of dust, fines, and contaminants
· Screening mesh selected based on your plant data
· Enhanced surface area, cleaner catalyst beds
3. LOADING
· Sock or dense loading based on reactor specs
· Even distribution to prevent hotspots or pressure spikes
· Catalyst protected from moisture, oxygen, and ambient contaminants
REAL IMPACT FOR YOUR PLANT
Our clients consistently benefit from:
✅ Extended catalyst lifespan
✅ Faster turnarounds
✅ Improved reactor flow
✅ Lower attrition and losses
✅ Regulatory compliance and ESG alignment
We understand the economic and environmental pressures our clients face — and we’re here to deliver measurable results.
